What is Absolute value?

Absolute value describes the distance from zero that a number is on the number line, without considering direction. The absolute value of a number is never negative.

The absolute value of 6 is 6. The distance from 6 to 0 is 6 units.

The absolute value of –6 is 6. The distance from –6 to 0 is 6 units.

The absolute value of 2 + (–6) is 4. When representing the sum on a number line, the resulting point is 4 units from zero.

The absolute value of 0 is 0. (This is why we don't say that the absolute value of a number is positive. Zero is neither negative nor positive.)

Example Absolute Values:

The absolute value of a number can be thought of as the distance of that number from 0 on a number line.

The absolute value of 8 is 8 written | 8 | = 8

The absolute value of -8 is 8 written | -8 | = 8

The absolute value of 0 is 0 written | 0 | = 0
